Hopi Early Voting Increases 1900 Percent
Early voting on the Hopi Reservation increased 1900 percent thanks to a coordinated effort by the Ann Kirkpatrick campaign, the Hopi Tribe voter registration office, the Arizona Democratic Party and the Navajo County Democrats.
Only four people took advantage of early voting during the primary, but the number increased to 83 for general election early voting on Thursday, Oct. 9
The coordinated effort included radio advertising, statements by Hopi and Navajo County leaders and barbecues at the two election locations.
The Hopi Tribe is interested in increasing its influence through greater participation in the electoral process.
Hopi is in fourth place in a competition among major tribes in Arizona for voter registration and voter turnout, behind the Navajo, White Mountain Apache and San Carlos Apache. The Hopi are just ahead of the Tohono O'odham.
