Tobin Proposes To Repeal Key American Freedoms
Andy Tobin, a candidate for the Republican nomination for Arizona’s first Congressional District, has proposed repealing the very words in the U.S. Constitution that make all Americans citizens regardless of race.

In a Graham County appearance, he recently proposed repealing the opening words of the 14th Amendment which say: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.”

The United States did not come to the 14th Amendment easily. Massed formations of Americans fired muskets and cannons into each other at point blank range for four years until 620,000 were dead and 476,000 were wounded.

At the close of the Civil War, the 14th Amendment was enacted to finally establish that all Americans are citizens. It is part of the sacred framework of American freedom and not to be toyed with by extremists trying to appeal to the anti-Hispanic, anti-Native American vote.

The 14th Amendment not only protects such basic rights as citizenship, but even things like gun ownership. The Second Amendment famously prevents the federal government from confiscating guns, but states and local governments are prevented from enacting overly restrictive gun laws only because the 14th Amendment protects Liberty from intrusions by all levels of government.

As the Republicans battle for the far right in their primary, we are going to hear a lot of nonsense in coming months. But ultimately, all Americans need a Congress that will address the problems of the 21st century, not mess with our basic freedoms or take us back into the bloody battles of the 1800s.
