NE AZ Hispanics Gather for Democratic Festival
Several hundred Hispanic people from throughout northeast Arizona attended a Cinco de Mayo celebration in Holbrook sponsored by the Navajo County Democratic Committee.
In addition to the fun of watching folkloric dancers, listening to top bands and breaking piņatas, the crowd checked their voter registrations and signed nominating petitions for democratic candidates ranging from clerk of the superior court to Congress.
The Hispanic grassroots coordinating committee collected 75 names for potential voter registrations.
Lanny Morrison, a candidate to represent Holbrook, Snowflake/Taylor and Flagstaff in the Legislature, addressed the crowd. He promised to work on the problems of the district rather than pursuing the extreme right-wing agenda of the incumbents, which does not help the district.
Among the people collecting nominating signatures were field workers for Ann Kirkpatrick's Congressional re-election campaign.
Masters of ceremonies included Holbrook Justice of the Peace Evelyn Marez and City Councilman Phil Cobb.
Dance troupes from Winslow and Holbrook gave breathtaking performances and bands included Juan Guttierrez and friends from Pinetop, Los Dirty White Boys from Holbrook and Fusion from Holbrook High School.
Both the Little Colorado River Democrats and the White Mountain Democrats worked to make the event a success.
