Navajo Nation Demonstrates Internet Voting

President Begaye Joins Nation Employees in Casting Democratic Vote Online Window Rock, Navajo Nation - Navajo Nation President, Kelsey A. Begaye, will make history by being the first Navajo president to cast his democratic ballot by use of the technological superhighway. President Begaye will join Navajo Nation employees and Navajo democrats on Thursday, March 9, 2000, in Window Rock, AZ at Veterans Memorial Park (Navajo Nation Museum for inclement weather), to place their votes in the Arizona Democratic primary election on the Internet.

"We are definitely living in an exciting time. The information superhighway is moving at the speed of light. Internet voting is going to open up underrepresented minority sectors of the population to active participation in the voting process. The Navajo Nation is going to be the first to hit the voting booths by actually not going to the booths, but going to our computers and our laptops," said President Begaye.

"It is the Navajo Nation's ultimate goal to bridge the telecommunications divide in Navajo country by bringing every Navajo community online. We have plans, in the works, to work with corporations and philanthropic organizations to have public access computers at every Navajo Nation chapter in the future," stated President Begaye.

Further, President Begaye sent a memorandum to departments and divisions in the Executive Branch of the Navajo Nation encouraging employees to participate in voting online during the democratic primary. The Arizona Democratic Party will be sending a van with laptops and computer personnel to be available for the general public to vote online. This is part of an effort to connect underrepresented voting communities to the Internet and vote online for the Arizona democratic primary.

In collaboration with the Arizona Democratic Party, the Office of the President/Vice President is working with national and local press to document this historic occasion.

The public is encouraged to join staff from the Office of the President/Vice President to make a historic vote for the first-ever political election on the Internet. To vote early over the Internet you must have the Personal Identification Number (PIN) that was mailed to registered Democrats by the Arizona Democratic Party. If you did not receive your PIN in the mail, please call (877) 377-VOTE.

If you are unable to attend the vote online event, you can still make your vote count at any computer hooked-up to the Internet, just go to www.azdem.org or www.election.com to cast your vote over the Internet.
